Why the blog?

I write as the Spirit moves me. I have prayed about what I'm supposed to do with my life a lot. A lot. Writing. Writing is what I believe God is leading me to do. Whether or not He wants me to write for anyone to read is His business. Much of my writing has been therapy for me so maybe I'm the only one who is supposed to read it. So, why the Blog? As a sounding board, a note pad, a place to keep my ideas and thoughts. A place to share and promote my books, and photography. Written prayers, a place to vent. Possibly, even a place for the unknown reader to learn about the love of Jesus.

THE END

"The End".  It's a bittersweet sentence.  The end of what? The end of whom? Maybe, it's just the beginning.

As a writer, 'the end' takes a long time.  I look forward to finally being able to write it. The ending is difficult to write, at least for me.  As a reader, I often am sad when I reach the end of a good book.  I want the story to continue, what happens next? I suppose that's what sequels are for.

"The End" is a badge of accomplishment, a finish line, a statement that a goal has been achieved.  The End is synonymous with "Whoo Hoo!  I did it!"

As a runner, the finish line is just a stepping stone.  This race is over, when's the next one?  After writing ten, now eleven books, I must have the same mind set for writing.  It's not quite so easy to pick up and write a new novel as it is to put one foot in front of the other and run another 3, 6, 9, 26.2 miles.  Although, I must admit the older I get the running is becoming more difficult than the writing.

So, you're asking, have you just written "The End"?

Why, yes, yes I have.  Thank you for asking as my thoughts wander and my fingers take me to another place because I'm thinking of something else to write and whether or not I want to run 25 miles in the 98% humidity tomorrow.

Ready? Set? HERE IT IS!!!

WILDWOOD

My husband, bless him, says this is my best book yet.  He says that every time.  I believe he thinks he's not allowed to say otherwise because I feed him and he sleeps with me. What do you think?

I have the paperback coming out soon on Amazon and also the ebook is available on Smashwords.com.   Check my website (www.colleenwait.com) on Fridays for Freebie Fridays through Smashwords.

Fun? in Phoenix part 2

Continued from previous post:
Friday morning, I woke up at 5 am.  My roommates were still asleep so I crept into the bathroom and put on my work-out clothes and went down to the gym.  My key didn't work.  No surprise there, par for the course so far I suppose.  I called the front desk and they sent someone right away to let me in.  I ran for about 45 minutes before anyone else showed up. I enjoyed the solitude.  When I returned to the room, my roommates were up and dressed.  I was not in a huge hurry to get to the convention hall.  The women I had met up with the night before planned on being there at 6:30 to get good seats.  My roommates and I arrived at 7:30.  The large hallway was just beginning to fill up, but it wasn't overly crowded and we found our group near the front of the line.  Next to us was a woman with a service dog.  Not just any service dog - a great dane.

Service dog at convention.

Because of what happened next, I may need him.  I stood with my group near the front and by the wall.
As the crowds got heavier, I moved closer to the wall where it was a little more open.  Several minutes later, I begin feeling agitated.  I'm looking around, shifting my weight from foot to foot, backing up, turning around. My heart is pounding and I start breathing heavy.  Basically, I'm in fight or flight mode and I'm starting to shake.  Mentally, I know I'm safe, not in any danger.  Physically, my body is rejecting all intellectual thought.  Suddenly my eyes begin to tear up and one of the ladies in our group turns around and looks me in the face, "All you okay?" she asks with a very concerned tone.  I shake my head no and tell her I'm going to the bathroom and I'll be out when the crowds go away. Fortunately, the bathroom is only about three yards away but I have to push through the crowd to get there.   Inside the converted men's room, I find and empty stall, lock myself in and start crying my eyes out.  I texted my husband, "I wanna come home!"  I did at that point.  I could have left with no regrets.  Being the wonderful man he is, he assured me I was fine and to take a breather and go back in when I was ready.  Which I did.  I was embarrassed.  This was the second time this had happened.  The first was at a race when I couldn't find my husband after crossing the finish line.  I sat on a curb and cried for 20 minutes (after running around in a panic thinking he had left me).

About 10 minutes or so later, I left the sanctuary of the men's room and found my group.  Fortunately, they were near the front and I was able to relax - sort of.

The main session was really good.  The shadow dance group performed and Bell (the founder) sang.  Several videos were shown.  One was about the trip to Europe and the new Swarovski crystal line of jewelry (yippies) and the Origami Owl story.  If your kids want a car for their birthday, have them watch this video.  If you've ever wanted to own your own business, watch it.  Also, we learned something that I thought was really exciting.  Origami Owl will begin offering health insurance through Agentra beginning August 1st to qualified designers (meeting minimum volumes).  Read more about it here.

Near 12:30 I was ready to climb the walls. Plus, I was starving.  12:30 Phoenix is 3:30 Orlando so way past my lunch time.   I excused myself and found some food and a free massage!!!  I so needed that massage.  It was free but I tipped the woman well.  I went to two breakout classes and then I broke out and went back to the hotel.  Around 5 pm just as we were all leaving for our group dinner, a sandstorm warning set off alarms on everyone's phones.  We didn't get caught in the storm, but could see it in the distance.

Dinner went well, I had dairy-free options to eat.  It was a little stressful at first because I had to find a waiter, in the crowd, to ask about food.  I'm always stressed when eating out and this was no different, worse even.  One of the women, Christina, made the evening and really the whole week-end bearable and even a little fun.

There was a photo booth in the restaurant and she was the first person to pull me in.  Normally, I don't like having my picture taken, however, with the hats and funny glasses and mustaches it was fun.  She, Christina, always answered my texts right away and checked in with me often throughout the week-end.  My roommates were great, too.  In fact, they decorated our hotel room door.  The pictures of me they pulled off the internet.
I love this quote from Chrissy Weems:  The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our "behind the scenes" with everyone else's "highlight reel".   You may think the grass is greener on the other side, but if you took the time to water your own grass, your's would be just as green.

My husband often says the same thing, referring mainly to Facebook.  People's lives aren't that perfect and we tend to compare our meager life to what is portrayed on FB as a perfect, happy life.

All you need is within you, right now.  Search for it, find it, water it, and let your light shine.  If you are having a bad day, skip!

Overall, this was an experience that I needed as much as I did not want it.  I needed to get out of my comfort zone.  I can't say that I'm afraid of crowds.  Otherwise, I would not have gone at all.  For me it's a physical reaction that I, thus far, have little control over.  Praying definitely helped.  I know my limits.  I push myself out of the box a little at a time and next time, if there is a next time, I will do more, enjoy it more, engage more, socialize more.

I returned home exhausted, yet excited at all the possibilities that lay before me.  I leave you with this:

Authors In The Park

The Mount Dora event series Authors in the Park continues with its Second Annual “Spring into Art” festival, Saturday, March 29 at Long and Scott’s Farm in Mount Dora, FL., event chairman Mark Miller announced today. The Authors in the Park group celebrates literacy while promoting local and independent authors from Lake County, Central Florida and beyond. (www.authorsinthepark.com)
The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be the first time the group has held an event at Long and Scott’s Farm at 26216 County Road 448A, Mount Dora, Miller said.
“We are extremely excited, not only to be at Long and Scott’s, but because this year’s event will feature both authors and artists,” Miller said. “Long and Scott’s is known for Zellwood Sweet Corn and their fall corn maze as well as being a great supporter of their community.” (www.longandscottfarms.com)
Spring into Art will feature over twenty authors and artists. A wide variety of books will be for sale in all genres and ages, as well as exclusive artwork. Some of the paintings are slated to be sold for charity.
In addition to great books and art, representatives for Team Jay will be on hand, Miller, an author himself, said. Team Jay is a project of the Lake County Firefighters Charity to benefit young Jay, the son of a firefighter currently battling Leukemia. (www.lakefirefightercharity.org)
The outdoor event is free to attend, Miller pointed out. Authors and artists alike will be available to discuss their writing, sign autographs and enjoy a day on the farm. Some author proceeds will be donated to Team Jay and other worthy organizations, he said. Scott’s Country CafĂ© will be open for lunch.

Visit www.Facebook.com/AuthorsInThePark for details on participating authors, artists and event updates.

Newsflash!

Local Christian Writer Releases 10th Book

A local woman from Apopka, Colleen Wait, is set to release her tenth book, Jacob’s Well, in May.  Wait is a Christian-Inspirational writer, blogger and free-lance editor, and has been publishing her full-length books through Create Space and Amazon Kindle for about five years.
While cranking out two books a year may not seem like a big deal to the average Joe, it definitely stands out when you realize these books came about in the midst of a chaotic full-time schedule of medical transcription and raising two children of her own, plus two “bonus” daughters with husband, Mark.  Add the many hours of volunteer service to youth and the homeless at the West Orange Church of Christ, in Winter Garden, and ten books is definitely a big deal. “Big,” however, is not a word anyone would use to describe first impressions of Wait.
One of the first things you notice about Colleen Wait is her stature.  Wait is tiny, as in vertically challenged, standing at barely five feet.  She’s also lean, as in marathon distance runner lean.   As a matter of fact, if all you ever knew about Colleen Wait is her dogged determination to master the 26.2 miles of a grueling marathon you’d walk away impressed.  But that determination has been brewing for decades, and was borne out of an even more remarkable towering faith.  And once you know the height of her faith, Wait stands taller than anyone in the room.
Writing has been an outlet for this naturally shy woman since her challenging childhood.  The result was an avenue for creative expression, as well as a coping mechanism for her hardships.  Those hardships are the foundation on which she built the soaring faith that is the source of all her stories.
In Jacob’s Well, Wait tells the story of Analeigh Kendrick, a teenage girl who is led by her faith in God to sow goodness in the midst of bad circumstances.  It is a story of planting seeds, both agricultural and spiritual, in the face of hardship and opposition.  Wait says she hopes readers will walk away with a sense of hope, and will be encouraged to pursue their own opportunities to share goodness in challenging times.
Wait is a genuinely reserved person who says she wishes she could be more like the main character in Jacob’s Well
“I’m not outgoing or outspoken.  I get knots in my stomach when talking to people [I don’t know well].  I force myself, but it doesn’t come easily,” said Wait.  “I know my gift is in the written word, not the verbal.”  Now Wait uses her writing in an effort to help others who may be struggling.
[Other books written by Colleen Wait are:  Freedom Race, Captured, Lessons Learned at Summer Camp, Sanctuary, Remnant, Man in the Mirror, Love on the Run, Mount Mission, and Black Purple Sky.  All are available through Amazon.com and Create Space. You can follow the author on: colleenwaitwrites.blogspot.com ]

I am thrilled to announce the release of my tenth book, Jacob's Well.   It is currently available on Amazon as a kindle and will be released in the next week as a paperback.

"Analeigh Kendrick is given news that she soon realizes is opportunity. Eager to do God's work she turns a small town upside down when she is not intimidated by a preacher who has firm control over it and the church. She sees through him, learns what the town needs, and most importantly, relies solely on God for her every move. Analeigh plants seeds in everyone she meets giving the gift of life."

May 10th and 11th I am having a New Release Promotion.  This book will be free on Amazon.com.

Coming soon to an Amazon near you.....

My tenth book, Jacob's Well should be on bookshelves in the very near future.  Beta readers, final editing, publishing.  The little tedious details writers don't particularly care for, especially me.  I prefer to write, then wave a magic wand, BAM, it's perfect and on the bookshelf.  I'll be patient if you can.

Lessons Learned from Summer Camp has been re-written

Below is an except, a brand new scene from the fully revised version of "Lessons"...

“Oftentimes, whenever I was really angry about something I would clean house. Take all that negative energy and put it to good use.  The taxes were done on a Friday. Saturday morning I start cleaning. By mid afternoon, the kids were playing outside and Dean was sound asleep on the couch in front of the TV.  As I am putting things away and cleaning out an under-the-bed storage drawer I see something that should not be there.  I very gingerly grab it by the handle with two fingers and stand up.  My jaw dropped as I stared at a handgun.”

“Oh, no!” cried several of the girls.

“I’m in complete shock.  I had no idea it had been there.”

“What’re you doing?” asked a voice inches from my back.

“Dean scared the life out of me.  I had no idea how long I had been standing there staring at the gun or how long he had been standing behind me.  I jumped at the sound of his voice.  The gun slipped out of my fingers and hit the tile floor.  The sound was ear-shattering as the gun fired, the window shattered, and the kids screamed as they ran into the house.”

I paused as the room went dead silent. My heart began beating hard in my chest as I remembered that moment.  “As soon as I heard the kids slam the back door, I turned around, shoved Dean out of my way and ran to my children.”

“Did the cops come?” asked Keri.

“No,” I said.  “We lived in a very rural area.  Lot of trees, neighbors far apart. I don’t know if anyone heard anything.  When I got to the kids they were frightened, but unharmed.  The bullet had hit a tree near where they were playing.  I sent them to their rooms then went back to where Dean was, still standing in our bedroom.”

“A gun in the house?!” I screamed.  “Are you insane!  A loaded gun?  Right where the kids could get it, too.  They were in here playing hide and seek just days ago. What? Why?  You do know it is a felony for you to even own a gun much less have a loaded one in the house!  Get that thing and get it out of this house. Immediately!!  Do not even think about returning until you have disposed of it and bring me proof that it is gone.  And believe me, I will be searching your truck to make sure you didn’t just hide it!” I was absolutely livid and he just stood there like it was no big deal.

“It’s your fault it went off,” he said, trying to blame me.

“Get out!!” I screamed at him. “There had better not be anymore anywhere on this property or believe me, I will call the cops!”

“You wouldn’t dare call the cops. It was an accident. We don’t need to call the police!”

“I’m sure I said much more and much worse.  I hate guns, always have.  The fact that he was hiding a loaded gun after being convicted of a gun charge was more than I could handle. He took the gun, left, and didn’t return until after I was asleep that night.

“We went to church as usual the following Sunday. I sent the kids and Dean to Sunday School class and I made a bee line for the bathroom.  When I left the bathroom and didn’t see Dean, I found an elder and poured out my soul to him.  I told him that I felt like I had done everything I possibly could to make my marriage work. I told him because of what Dean did in front of the children it was no longer healthy for him to be in our home, not healthy for me either.  I told the elder I would be asking Dean to move out, immediately, that day.  He was very understanding and said he and the other elders would support me and my decision.  He thought it would be a good idea to tell Dean there at the church.  After church, the elders and I met with Dean.  I told him he would have to move out as soon as we got home. I didn’t say so at the time, but I knew divorce would be the end result. Needless to say, he was shocked.   Out in the parking lot, he let me have it.  I don’t remember everything he said, but a few things I will never forget.”

Find this book and many others at Smashwords and Amazon.
